Why Should I Care

We all had someone. Someone who helped us as we were growing up. A teacher that made you realize it’s okay to like to read. A coach that made you feel good even when the team was blown away by the competition. A neighbor that always stopped to chat with you. A friend of your family who remembered to send you a birthday card. We may not have realized it at the time, but these adults were mentoring us to be better people. They cared about you, even though you were just a kid.

The access to state lawmakers that is available through the website maintained by the South Dakota Legislative Research Council is second to none and in fact is the envy of states with more resources. If you want to know more about the legislature, a specific issue, or give lawmakers a piece of your mind then http:// legis.state.sd.us is an easy to use and effective tool for learning and communicating with state legislators in Pierre.

Why should I care about early childhood education?

As an emerging leader, your attention to community needs that support educational success, a qualified workforce, and vibrant communities matters.
Early childhood lays the foundation for all of that: children are born ready to learn. Their brains develop with astonishing speed. Fully 85 percent of a child’s brain structure is formed by age 3. By the fifth birthday, pre-reading, language and math foundations are in place. The neural connections that support fundamental language, math and social-emotional functions are laid down long before a child enters kindergarten.
